What is this?

Postby Herminia » Sun Aug 30, 2015 7:53 pm

Hi All,

I am sitting here at work dreaming about getting back on the boat and to continue my projects. And then I was thinking about one thing on the boat which I walk past continuously while thinking: "I soon have to figure out what that thing is". Here is a picture of it which I found on the net. It has a kind of screw in the middle which can be opened I think. Is it for ventilating something maybe?

How does it look right under it? Under deck I mean. Looks a bit overkill for ventilation. I would guess you could screw something in it. Like a block for the spinnaker sheets downhaul, maybe. Looks sturdy enough for that.

But now I'm just guessing, don't have a clue ;)

This is what it is. Just saw it on another Italien built boat. It's for the spinnaker and you screw the block down.

As you've worked out its for the spinnaker guy. If you use double sheets and guys you lead the guy through this block - one end to the tack of the spin and the other to the secondary winch. Unless you have zero stretch guys it wont work on a reach as the angle with the pole is too narrow - we used to use wire on the old IOR boats. I use it for a sheet lead to pole out the genoa, keeps the sheet from resting on the guardrail.

Thanks R., I haven't dared to try the spinnaker yet, but using it for the genoa could be handy :)
