Rusty mast base GS52

Postby Herminia » Thu Jan 09, 2014 9:30 pm

Hi folks,

When I bought my GS52 1991 model recently, I found the mast base to be completely rusty. So, if you havent't already checked yours, the best is to have a look. This is an easy fix and can even be changed without taking off the mast according to Pier 12 shipyard in Ravenna, Italy. This a specialist yard for Grand Soleil and also the main launching/commisioning point for new Grand Soleil boats. They have already made several replacement mast bases. Contact details below.

On the same theme it is also worth checking the condition of the backing plates for the keel bolts, I have seen these to rust badly too. I believe some were originally spec'd in mild steel.

Pier12 is now finished replacing the mast base. Look, nice and shiny :-)

Looks good. Did they remove the mast completely?

Yes, the mast was removed but this is not necessary for changing the bast base. It was removed because I am doing a full re-fit of the mast to bring it back to "as new" condition. This includes painting the spreaders (I have the white in-mast furling option), change of most running rigging, replacing cables, installing LED lights etc.

Rusty mast base GS52

My mast was hard to rotate at times. I found a 3/4" diameter Teflon chair glide and screwed it into the mast base. It has worked well for 4-years. The mast is much easier to rotate.
